Whisky is a type of distilled alcoholic drink, which is made from fermented grain mash. Various grains such as wheat, rye, corn and barley are used to produce varieties of whiskies. It is strictly regulated spirit all over the world with many types and classes. Whisky or its products are largely produced in grain-growing areas. They differ in alcoholic content, base product and quality.

The demand of whisky has shown up a declining trend in the western markets in the recent years. However, demand is rising in India and other Asian countries. This, coupled with increasing disposable incomes in the region, has made the whisky market of Asian countries attractive for MNCs with popular brands. Today, India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest growing Scotch whisky import markets. In fact, whisky remains the favourite tipple of liquor drinkers in India. Whisky accounted for 61.2% of India’s total spirits market by volume in calendar year 2016, a report on India imports of alcoholic beverages reveal. The spirit market consists of 8 categories namely – speciality spirits, rum, liqueurs, gin & genever, brandy, mescal & tequila, vodka and whisky. It has a complex tax structure with taxes levied by both Central and State Governments. Spirits vs. Beer and Wine

whisky vs beer eximfile

The above alcoholic drinks import data of India shows that wine was the 2nd largest type of alcoholic drink imported into the country, while, beer stood at 4th position. In India, consumption of spirits exceeds that of beer and wine due to their lower cost per unit of alcohol. The ratio in favour of spirits would be even higher if country liquor were included. Also, there is a growing demand for dark spirits especially Scotch whiskies in India and other Asian countries.

In other countries around the world, especially in the western markets, on the other hand, the consumption of drinks with lower alcoholic content like in wine & beer has not only exceeded that of spirits but has also shown up higher growth. In addition to this, there has been a shift in global demand from dark spirits such as brandy, dark rum, whisky, etc. towards white spirits such as gin, white rum, vodka, etc.
